On board we have just had gas-masks issued and it occurs to me that it is time to readjust the Virgilian conception of  the Gates of Horn  and the Gates of Ivory; according to Virgil true dreams come through the former and false through the latter, truth as usual being thought of as correspondence to fact, and fact being limited to the waking world of the senses. But that will not do any more. My waking eyes show me human beings in gas-masks, archaic monsters but not, like the seahorse, beautiful, and why should I call that truth? It is worse than any dream that the Ivory Gates ever opened on. You can chop and change the words; if the world of gas-masks is x, you can call x Appearance of Fact or the Given or the Real or the Actual or Truth, but you have to suppose another world y which according to your phraseology may not be more factual or even more actual or even more true or even more real but, if not given, at least is made, which is better. So gas-masks are made too? In a sense of course you are right, but that is the paradox of technology. It begins with sheer creative imagination and it ends - at least that is how it looks in 1940 - in a brute and random necessity, negation of human freedom.

Według Wergiliusza sny prawdziwe przechodzą przez tę pierwszą, a łudzące przez drugą, prawda jest, jak zwykle, rozumiana jako zgodność z faktami, a fakt ograniczony do odczuwanego zmysłami świata czuwania. Ale teraz to już nie do przyjęcia. Moje czuwające oko ukazuje mi istotę ludzką w masce gazowej - starożytnego potwora, lecz nie pięknego jak hippokamp, i dlaczego mam nazywać to prawdą? To jest gorsze od  każdego snu, ktory kiedykolwiek przekroczył bramę z kości słoniowej. Można kluczyć między słowami, jeśli świat maski gazowej jest x, niech x będzie Ujawnieniem Faktu lub Tym Co Dane lub Tym Co Realne lub Tym Co Właściwe lub Prawdą ale wobec tego należy założyć istnienie innego świata y, który według twojej frazeologii może nie być bardziej faktyczny czy nawet bardziej właściwy czy nawet bardziej prawdziwy czy nawet bardziej realny, ale jeśli nie jest dany, przynajmniej jest stworzony, co jest lepsze. Więc maski gazowe też są stworzone? W pewnym sensie oczywiście masz rację, ale na tym polega paradoks technologii. Zaczyna się jako czysta twórcza wyobraźnia i kończy się - przynajmniej tak się wydaje w roku 1940 - jako bezwzględna przypadkowa konieczność, zaprzeczene ludzkiej wolności.
